Just how is the recession effecting the world of fashion?

With businesses going under everywhere in the recession, how has the fashion world held up? Designers used to using high end materials that cost alot, are now expected to use cheaper material but still achieve the same effects. Some designers have thrived under the pressure, using it as a inspriation to create unique and unusual designer clothes. Where there was money used to solve a problem before is now being solved with creative solutions, which gives them some inspired works. They have tapped into the zeitgeist of the times and have decided to stop showing their new collections at over-elelaborate catwalk shows. Designers are now having smaller functions to showcase their collections or one to one meetings with fashion editors or buyers, getting rid of alot of the extravagance. Some designers have gone one of two ways, either tailor their designs to the rich, who are uneffected by the credit crunch or have chosen to target the general public with simpler looking designs and a smaller price tag.
Shops like Debenhams has reported that their designer ranges have actually seen a boost in sales with womens and mens fashion. Shoppers have begun to think about what they buy, and are purchasing high end clothing without the high end price tag. Debenham’s reported a double digit sales increase coming upto xmas while sales and profits increased this year.
The demand in America and Europe was dropped, in the Middle East demand has risen. So desingers have started focusing on the Middle East market to gain back the lost revenue from the American and European markets.
So while people arent spending the huge amounts on clothing as they once used to, they are still spending- just wisely. Designers are welcoming the challenge of the recession and letting it inspire them, rather than letting it have a negative imapct.
